Modelling the Perception of Illusory Contours: Linking Gestalt-Laws and cortical Oscillations
نویسنده
چکیده
A network for the perception of illusory contours inspired from neurophysio-logical and psychophysical ndings is proposed, incorporating a relaxation phase labeling and diiusion process. The network groups visual features into perceptual entities by (de)synchronising parametric phase labels of simple neuronal oscillators using a constraint satisfaction mechanism. The local constraints between features, which model the Gestaltist grouping principles proximity and good continuation 15, 20], act horizontally in, and vertically between feature dimensions to allow for the emergent segregation of globally salient illusory contours. An initial nonlinear edge detection stage extracts two saliency maps for oriented and orthogonal cooperation between edges and endpoints. The energy maps are rectiied into ON-and OFF-channels which cooperate for nearby ori-entations but compete for orthogonal and opposing directions in phase space suppressing false responses generated from the edge detection stage.

Parietal cortex mediates conscious perception of illusory gestalt.
Grouping local elements into a holistic percept, also known as spatial binding, is crucial for meaningful perception. Previous studies have shown that neurons in early visual areas V1 and V2 can signal complex grouping-related information, such as illusory contours or object-border ownerships. However, relatively little is known about higher-level processes contributing to these signals and med...
متن کاملIllusory contour perception and amodal boundary completion: evidence of a dissociation following callosotomy.
A fundamental problem in form perception is how the visual system can link together spatially separated contour fragments to form the percept of a unitary shape. Illusory contours and amodal completion are two phenomena that demonstrate this linking process. In the present study we investigate these phenomena in the divided hemispheres of two callosotomy ("split-brain") patients. The data sugge...

How does the visual system generate percepts of moving forms? How does this happen when the forms are emergent percepts, such as illusory contours or segregated textures, and the motion percept is apparent motion between the emergent forms? We develop a neural model of form-motion interactions to explain and simulate parametric properties of psychophysical motion data and to make predictions ab...

متن کاملEquivalent representation of real and illusory contours in macaque V4.
The cortical processing of illusory contours provides a unique window for exploring the brain mechanisms underlying visual perception. Previous electrophysiological single-cell recordings demonstrate that a subgroup of cells in macaque V1 and V2 signal the presence of illusory contours, whereas recent human brain imaging studies reveal higher-order visual cortices playing a central role in illu...
